Engineering (BE/ B.Tech) Admission

Engineering is a dynamic field that combines scientific principles, mathematical techniques, and practical knowledge to design, develop, and analyze technological solutions. It focuses on safety, efficiency, functionality, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. In the modern era, engineering is typically categorized into several core branches, including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Chemical Engineering. Additionally, there are numerous interdisciplinary and specialized fields such as Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Environmental Engineering, which continue to evolve with advancements in technology and innovation.

What does an engineer do?

Engineers play a crucial role in shaping the world around us. They design, develop, test, and implement a wide range of products, systems, and structures. Their responsibilities include evaluating technical solutions, modifying and improving existing technologies, and overseeing the installation and maintenance of systems. Engineers also recommend appropriate materials and manufacturing processes, supervise production and construction activities, analyze failures, and provide expert consultancy. In addition, many engineers contribute to education by teaching in colleges and universities, helping to train the next generation of professionals.

  • Designing and developing new products or systems
  • Testing and evaluating prototypes
  • Modifying existing technologies for improved efficiency
  • Supervising manufacturing or construction processes
  • Recommending materials and techniques
  • Analyzing failures and offering fixes
  • Teaching and mentoring students in academic institutions

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING -

Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies engineering, physics, engineering mathematics, and materials science principles to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines. The mechanical engineering field requires an understanding of core areas including mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity. In addition to these core principles, mechanical engineers use tools such as computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and product life cycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, and others. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery.

CIVIL ENGINEERING -

Civil engineering is the design, construction, and maintenance of public works, including roads, bridges, harbors, etc. At Oregon State University our programs in civil engineering prepare students to become working professional civil engineering and academic researchers who study civil engineering problems. Our civil engineering undergraduate program offers a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) degree where students receive general instruction in all disciplines, with the option for additional elective courses in desired areas. While our graduate program offers many areas of specialization for research focus: construction engineering management, geomatics engineering, geotechnical engineering, innovative materials, ocean and coastal engineering, structural engineering, surveying, transportation engineering, and water resources engineering.

COMPUTER ENGINEERING -

Computer science and engineering (CSE) is an academic program at some universities that integrates the fields of computer engineering and computer science. It is a sub-field of electronic engineering, covering only the digital aspects of electronics engineering, specializing in hardware-systems areas like computer architecture, processor design, high-performance computing, parallel processing, computer networks and embedded systems. CSE programs also include core subjects of computer science such as operating systems, theory of computation, design and analysis of algorithms, data structures and database systems. The program aims at designing, developing and troubleshooting computing devices (such as personal computers, supercomputers, robots, smartphones, networking devices, embedded devices), focusing the underlying fundamental issues (like processor architecture design, operating system design, memory management, digital system design, communication protocol design, software development and database management) in the most efficient and effective way.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING -

Electrical engineering is one of the newer branches of engineering, and dates back to the late 19th century. It is the branch of engineering that deals with the technology of electricity. Electrical engineers work on a wide range of components, devices and systems, from tiny microchips to huge power station generators. Early experiments with electricity included primitive batteries and static charges. However, the actual design, construction and manufacturing of useful devices and systems began with the implementation of Michael Faraday's Law of Induction, which essentially states that the voltage in a circuit is proportional to the rate of change in the magnetic field through the circuit. This law applies to the basic principles of the electric generator, the electric motor and the transformer. The advent of the modern age is marked by the introduction of electricity to homes, businesses and industry, all of which were made possible by electrical engineers.

ELECTRONICS & COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING -

Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) is a branch of engineering that deals with the design, development, and maintenance of electronic equipment and communication systems. It combines core concepts of electrical engineering with principles of communication to create devices like mobile phones, satellites, internet systems, radars, and wireless communication infrastructure.
ECE engineers work on signal processing, analog and digital transmission and reception of data, satellite communication, microwave engineering, antenna design, VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration), and embedded systems. With the increasing need for faster and more reliable communication systems, the role of electronics and communication engineers is becoming ever more significant in modern technology and industries.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING -

Chemical Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the transformation of raw materials into valuable products through chemical, physical, and biological processes. It combines principles of chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics to design processes and equipment for large-scale manufacturing, plan and test production methods, and oversee plant operations.

Chemical engineers are involved in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, food processing, fertilizers, and environmental safety. They play a crucial role in developing cleaner energy systems, waste treatment processes, and sustainable technologies that help reduce pollution and improve quality of life.

AEROSPACE ENGINEERING -

B.Tech. programme in Aerospace Engineering is aimed at imparting sound knowledge in the fundamental areas of the discipline and also expose students to advanced applications of this knowledge. The students will get the specialized training in the design and development of launch vehicles, aircraft and space craft. Aerospace Engineering deals with unlike most traditional ground based systems, optimality and reliability are of paramount importance in such systems. This necessitates accurate theoretical and experimental analyses of a variety of phenomena, and performance predictions of a variety of complex systems. Aerospace Engineering is the discipline which is closest to what is popularly known as Rocket Science.

BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING -

Biomedical Engineering is a multidisciplinary field that applies engineering principles to the medical and biological sciences. It focuses on the development of medical devices, diagnostic equipment, artificial organs, imaging systems like MRI and CT scanners, and advanced prosthetics to improve healthcare and patient outcomes.

Biomedical engineers work at the intersection of medicine and technology. Their innovations have transformed the healthcare industry by enabling early diagnosis, minimally invasive treatments, and advanced rehabilitation techniques. This field continues to grow rapidly, especially with the rise of biotechnology, wearable health tech, and personalized medicine.
